bling blau laos!

time to wrap up luang prabang and head to vientiane.  i was bummed to heading out of luang prabang so soon.  i coulda easily stayed another week.  oh well, i was looking forward to going to vientiane, which is the capital of laos.  all around laos you could see the french influence.  i think that out of all the countries i've visited in asia, wine was the most available there.  there were many wine & cheese places.  you could also see the french architecture and the dinners had a french feel to it.  they lasted for quite a while as you sat and people-watched.

this was a big staircase in luang prabang.

here's the last of luang prabang.  this is a wat near the national museum.

this is vientiane's arc de triumphe.  u'll see quite a french influence in the next few pictures.

this is the ceiling of the arc.

here's a view from the roof of the arc.  i think it's kewl.  a couple fountains, large boulevards, etc. etc.

the name of this place can't come to me right now.  oh well.  it was neat.

this is a buddhist samarui warrior (i declare).

here's anohter wat with the buddhists chillin in the front.

by gawd!  it's another wat!

since the monks don't work, the ppl give them food & cigs in the morning.  this is outside of a wat.  inside those green things are rice, fruit, nuts, or other assorted foods to help them thru the day.

here's a famous building (whose name escapes me) that seems out of place here.  i assume the french built this, but couldn't find a sign...or it wasn't in english.

here's where i had dinner.  another sweet & delicious meal for $5.

here's me clean feet after a few days of laos.  i think that are more black becuz of the material of the flip floppers.

this is freindship bridge between laos & thailand.  it's a waste of time, unless u're trying to go to the other country.  the river is the mekong.  someone told me to go there   one taxi drive was saying...'u can stamp my passport.'  i was like...uh, no.  i thought dude wanted me to do something with his at the border.  uh aw.  turns out it could have been a translation problem & i could have got mine stamped.  i wonder if taxi guy took me to the wrong area.  i heard there was supposed to be shopping there & alls i found was a bridge.

welcome to lao people's democratic republic.

afer the disappointment of the bridge, i told the tuk tuk guy to take me to the beerlao factory.  excellent.  i got there too early...it opened at 9am

to help calm my nerves they gave me a beer before they opened, which also doubled as me breakfast.

for lunch i stopped by this place that had an insects dish.  had it been the evening and more beer in me belly, i think i would have gotten it.

laos is so poor that in the duty free they only sell the mini-bottles of alcohol.  i kid, but was surprised to see them there.

u can also purchase single cans/bottles of beer.  yum yum for my tum tum.

in luang prabang, i stayed at khem kong view hotel (need to update).  great location, reasonable price.  turned out to be safe & clean.  in vientiane, i stayed at saysouly hotel.  this was more like a hostel...or at least half of it was.  it turned out to be OK, but would have rather been somewhere else.  good location though.
